How to convert a monthly salary to an hourly rate

If you are paid monthly but want to know your hourly worth — to compare a job, price freelance work, or check a contract — the conversion takes two quick steps.

The formula

First turn the monthly figure into a yearly one by multiplying by 12. Then divide by the number of hours you work in a year. For full-time work that is 40 hours a week across 52 weeks, or 2,080 hours. So: hourly = (monthly × 12) ÷ 2,080.

Worked examples

If you work more or fewer hours, change the yearly hours. Someone working 35 hours a week has 1,820 yearly hours, which raises their effective hourly rate.

Questions

What is $4,000 a month as an hourly rate?

$4,000 × 12 = $48,000 a year ÷ 2,080 hours = about $23.08 per hour for full-time work.

Is monthly salary before or after tax?

This conversion uses gross (before-tax) pay. For your after-tax hourly value, calculate take-home pay first, then divide by your yearly hours.

How many hours are in a work month?

About 173 hours (2,080 ÷ 12) for full-time, though it varies month to month.
