A reference range for your height — not a single “perfect” number.
Details
Formula
Devine formula: men = 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; women = 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. The healthy BMI range converts 18.5–24.9 into kilograms for your height.
Worked examples
- Male 170 cm → Devine ≈ 65.9 kg; healthy BMI range 53.5–72.0 kg.
- Female 160 cm → Devine ≈ 52.4 kg; range 47.4–63.7 kg.
- Male 183 cm → Devine ≈ 77.5 kg.
Common mistakes
- Treating one number as a goal — body composition, muscle and frame vary; the range matters more.
- Comparing across formulas (Devine, Robinson, Hamwi differ by a few kg) as if one is “true”.
- Using ideal-weight math for children or during pregnancy — it applies to adults.

Questions
What is my ideal weight?
There is no single number. The Devine estimate plus the healthy BMI range give a sensible reference band for your height.
Why does the formula use inches over 5 feet?
Devine was built on imperial units for medication dosing; it adds 2.3 kg per inch above 60 inches.
Is muscular weight “over” ideal?
Often yes on paper — muscle is dense. Athletic builds can be healthy above these ranges.
Which is better, BMI range or Devine?
Use both: Devine gives a point estimate, the BMI range shows the healthy spread.
Does age change ideal weight?
These formulas ignore age; slightly higher weights in older adults are common and can be healthy.
Is this medical advice?
No — it is an educational reference. Talk to a clinician about personal targets.
