Formula
Tax = price Γ rate. Total = price + tax. To remove tax from a total, divide by (1 + rate): a $107 total at 7% is $107 Γ· 1.07 = $100 before tax.
Worked examples
- $100 at 7% β $7 tax, $107 total.
- $59.99 at 8.25% β about $4.95 tax, $64.94 total.
- Remove: $214 total at 7% β $200 before tax.
Common mistakes
- Using only the state rate and forgetting local/city tax, which stacks on top.
- Subtracting the percentage from the total to βremoveβ tax β you must divide by 1+rate instead.
- Assuming every item is taxable; groceries and medicine are exempt or reduced in many states.
