How trip fuel cost works
Fuel used equals distance divided by your vehicle's efficiency; cost is fuel used times the price. In US units that is miles ÷ MPG × price per gallon. In metric it is litres per 100km × distance ÷ 100 × price per litre. Splitting the total between passengers shows each person's share — handy for carpools and road trips.
Questions
How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
Divide the distance by your fuel efficiency to get the fuel needed, then multiply by the fuel price. This tool does it for both US and metric units.
What is a good fuel efficiency?
It varies by vehicle, but higher MPG (or lower L/100km) means less fuel and lower cost for the same distance.
Can I split the cost with friends?
Yes. Enter the number of people and the tool shows the cost per person, plus you can add a return journey.
