Hourly to salary with taxes: what you really take home

Turning an hourly wage into a yearly salary is the easy part. The number that matters, though, is what is left after taxes.

Step 1: hourly to gross salary

Annual salary = hourly × hours per week × weeks per year. At $25 an hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks, that is $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year before tax.

Step 2: subtract taxes

From that gross figure come federal income tax (based on brackets and the standard deduction), Social Security at 6.2%, Medicare at 1.45%, and often state income tax. For many workers these remove roughly 20% to 30% of gross pay, so a $52,000 salary might leave somewhere around $42,000 take-home, depending on state and deductions.

Use the salary to hourly calculator for the gross conversion, then the take-home pay calculator to apply 2026 federal tax, FICA, your state, and 401(k). It even lets you compare two states side by side, which matters because take-home on the same salary can differ by thousands between, say, Texas and California.

Questions

What is $25 an hour after taxes?

$25/hour is about $52,000 gross a year. After federal tax and FICA, take-home is roughly $41,000–$44,000 depending on your state and deductions. Use the take-home tool for your exact figure.

Does overtime change my salary conversion?

Yes. Regular hourly-to-salary assumes standard hours. Overtime (often 1.5×) is paid on top and raises your actual annual earnings.

Which taxes come out of an hourly wage?

Federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any state or local income tax. Pre-tax items like a 401(k) lower your taxable income too.
