Vets use a staged model, not “×7”: the first dog year ≈ 15 human years, the second ≈ 9 more, then each year adds about 4 (small), 5 (medium) or 6 (large) — bigger dogs age faster after year two.
Worked examples
- A 4-year-old medium dog ≈ 34 human years.
- A 10-year-old small dog ≈ 56; a large dog the same age ≈ 72.
- A 1-year-old puppy is already a teenager (~15).
Common mistakes
- Multiplying by 7 — it understates young dogs and misses size differences.
